This Avalokiteshvara Thangka painting represents the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Bodhisattva means the spiritual path to Buddhahood (the perfection of generosity, the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of effort, the perfection of concentration, and the perfection of wisdom or ultimate reality).

In total, he has one thousand hands and is in white color. His upper hands hold prayer beads and a lotus; the lower ones, poised in a hand gesture of prayer, clasp the wish-fulfilling jewel at his heart.

Chenrezig is another name of Avalokiteshvara in Tibet. According to belief, he made a vow and promised to reach the highest Enlightenment in order to thereby save all beings from misery and establish them in perfect happiness.

Description

The name Avalokiteshvara combines the verbal prefix ava “down”, lokita, a past participle of the verb lok “to notice, behold, observe”, here used in an active sense; and finally ishvara, “lord”, “ruler”, “sovereign” or “master”. Hence, it means “The Lord Who Looks Down (in compassion)”.

He recites the prayer “Om Mane Padme Hum”. Om has various meaning but in general, it means basic reality. Mani means jewel, while Padme means lotus. Hum, like Om, has no conceptual meaning. Overall, the mantra is suggestive of the bringing together of the qualities of wisdom (the lotus) and compassion (the jewel).
