Mahakala is a deity to Hinduism and Buddhism. According to Hinduism, it is a manifestation of Lord Shiva and is the life companion of goddess Kali.
It also appears as a protector deity called Dharmapala in Vajrayana Buddhism. The Tibetan name for Mahakala is “Nagpo Chenpo” which means Great Black one and also a protector.
