This Mahakala Thangka is typically in black color. It is believed that all names and forms are said to melt into those of Mahakala black color, symbolizing his all-embracing and comprehensive nature. The color black also means the total absence of colors symbolizing the nature of Mahakala as the ultimate reality.

Mahakala has four arms, three eyes and intense brightness of millions of black fires of dissolution live in the midst of eight cremation grounds. He looks more attractive with eight skulls, seated on five corpses, holds a trident, a drum, a sword, and a scythe in his hands.

Mahakala is also one of the eight guardians of law protecting Buddhism from enemies. As he is the protector of law, Mahakala is given a high position at the entrance doors of Buddhism shrines.
