Guru Padmasambhava is most often called Guru Rinpoche in Tibetan, which means “precious master.” Guru Rinpoche Statue is a buddha, which means he is a fully enlightened being. He didn’t gradually become enlightened or start following the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni and then become enlightened. Guru Rinpoche was reborn as a being who had reached full enlightenment. Through his body, the wisdom of the beginning comes into the world to help all living things.
Guru Rinpoche’s portrait shows him with his eyes wide open. This is called the Mahasandhi gaze, and it is a very special way for a guru to look at you. He is often recognized by his long, thick locks of hair, in which we can sometimes see the image of the Bodhisattva. If there is any history behind the stories about Guru Rinpoche’s life, it will show something about the religious culture of his home country. The evidence that can be seen and touched sheds some light on this issue. From an artistic point of view, the many rock sculptures and other images were almost untouched and unrecognized for a long time. It wasn’t until they were studied and found to have a refined style and innovative iconography that they were seen as the start of ideas that later grew in Himalayan art.
